Before the journey
Whether it's a dog, cat or bird: many airlines allow you to take animals with you - but with restrictions. Rodents, for example, are usually excluded. Which animal species are permitted depends on the airline in question.
We recommend taking a look at the airline's website or calling their customer service.
The destination also plays a role. This is because each country has its own entry requirements for animals - often including quarantine or proof requirements. Up-to-date information is available from the Federal Foreign Office.
Proofs
A pet passport is required for travelling abroad. This passport documents all necessary vaccinations and is issued by the attending vet. In addition, each animal needs a microchip with all relevant identification data.
Check-in with a pet
For a good start, it is worth allowing a little more time - ideally, passengers with pets should arrive about two hours before departure.
- The pet's passport must be presented at check-in. This should always be kept to hand afterwards.
- Late-night check-in is not possible for pets.
- They are handed in at the bulky baggage counter. The animal will be weighed there, taken to the security area and then placed in the transport box.
Means of transport
A suitable box or bag is required for safe transport. This should be stable, escape-proof and comply with animal welfare regulations. Suitable transport boxes can be purchased from specialised pet shops. No means of transport are available for sale or hire at Stuttgart Airport.

Each airline decides individually whether animals are allowed to travel in the cabin - often the same dimensions apply as for hand luggage. Each airline determines which dimensions and weight are permitted. Some airlines also determine whether the animal must be placed in a box or may be transported in a bag.
