Barrier-free travelling

Consideration, responsibility, attention

We want the arrival and departure to be as barrier-free as possible for everyone - including people with limited mobility.

The following tips will help you to prepare your journey well and get off to a good start.

Start well prepared

If you need assistance at the airport, you should register the required help in good time - preferably at the time of booking. The notification should be made via the airline or travel agency. They can also clarify to what extent assistance is needed and what options are available.

The airline will organise the assistance and apply to the airport for the necessary support services. At the airport, the SAG (Stuttgart Airport Ground Handling GmbH) boarding support takes over the mobility service.

In addition, wheelchairs are available free of charge in Terminal 3 on the departures level. Wheelchairs are issued at the mobility service counter, please note the airlines' special conditions.

Register in good time

Early notification is important - it is regulated by European Union Regulation 1107/2006.

Stuttgart Airport can only organise suitable support and coordinate the required service if the information is provided in good time.

Mobility service at the airport

The mobility service is available daily from 4 a.m. to midnight.

If you would like to use the mobility service, you should be at the airport around 2.5 to 3 hours before departure.

The service provides assistance with getting on and off the aircraft and wheelchairs for use at the airport (please note airline conditions).

If the counter in the terminal is temporarily unmanned, the service can be contacted via any airport telephone by dialling 4000.

Good to know: The mobility service is specially designed for people with reduced mobility. If you need help with your luggage, you can use the luggage service, which will be happy to carry and transport your suitcases.

Mobility level - international classifications

To enable the airline to organise suitable assistance, the degree of mobility should be specified at the time of booking. In this way, the necessary assistance can be organised in good time.

The following international abbreviations help to categorise the level of assistance required:

  • WCHC (Wheelchair Cabin Seat): Passenger travelling in their own wheelchair. The wheelchair is required for the entire journey - even on board it is not possible to move around without assistance.
  • WCHS (Wheelchair Steps): Climbing stairs is not possible, but short distances on foot are feasible.
  • WCHR (Wheelchair Ramp): A wheelchair is only required for longer distances. Climbing stairs independently is possible.
  • BLND: For blind or visually impaired travellers.
  • DEAF: For deaf, hard of hearing or deaf-mute travellers.
  • DEAF-BLND: For travellers with a combined visual and hearing impairment.
  • DPNA (Disabled Passenger with Intellectual or Developmental Disability Needing Assistance): For people with cognitive impairments - for example, travellers with dementia who are travelling alone

Stuttgart Airport can be reached via the A 8 motorway (Karlsruhe–Munich) or the B 27 federal highway. After the ‘Flughafen Stuttgart’ exit, follow the signs for arrivals, departures or your booked car park.

The Kiss & Fly zone is located directly in front of the terminals, where you can stop for up to 8 minutes free of charge.

Good to know: The provider Rollimobil offers accessible rental cars for people with physical disabilities.

The S-Bahn station at the airport is wheelchair and blind-friendly. Lifts and ticket machines can also be operated barrier-free.

A lift change is required on the way from the S-Bahn level to the departure area.

Barrier-free parking at Stuttgart Airport

Barrier-free parking spaces are designated in all car parks and multi-storey car parks at the airport. The car park guidance system shows the way to free spaces in a clear and up-to-date manner.

In the multi-storey car parks, the barrier-free parking spaces are located on the ground floor, directly next to the entrances.

If you have any problems entering or exiting the car park, simply press the call button at the barrier - the control centre will help you.

Tip: The parking areas marked in green are particularly favourable and ideal for long-term parkers.

If you have any questions about parking, please contact Apcoa Autoparking on +49 711 948-4893.

In the terminal and at check-in

On the day of departure, the first stop is the airline check-in desk. The airport signage will help you find your way.

If you have any questions, you can contact the information desk in Terminal 3 at any time - the team on site will be happy to help.

After arriving at the airport, check-in begins. From here, individual assistance is organised - as required until departure.

Important: Not every restriction is recognisable at first glance. To ensure that personal needs can be taken into account, it is helpful to actively point this out to staff at check-in.

All terminals have barrier-free routes and lifts that allow passengers to move between levels independently.

Tip: If you would like to spend time with a companion after check-in, you can do so. Please contact the mobility service or check-in in good time to arrange collection.

Later transport to the gate will then be provided by the mobility service (boarding support). This can be found in Terminal 3 on the departures level - and can be contacted at least one hour before departure.

The mobility service can be contacted on +49 711 948-4000 or by e-mail at info@sag.aero.

Travelling with a wheelchair

When boarding the aircraft, it is sometimes necessary to transfer from your own wheelchair to an airport wheelchair. At Stuttgart Airport, free wheelchairs and trained staff are available to provide assistance.

Personal wheelchairs are transported in the cargo hold of the aircraft. To ensure that this works smoothly, please check in your wheelchair at the bulky baggage counter in Terminal 3. This will ensure that it is loaded safely and on time.

Important: For battery-operated wheelchairs, the change must be made particularly early - as special regulations apply to transport.

Tip: Travellers should find out about the battery type at the time of booking and inform the airline of this.

The battery must be disconnected, secured and the terminals insulated when checking in. The wheelchair is then checked in via the bulky baggage as described.

More consideration for people with invisible impairments

Around one in six people live with an impairment. For around 80 per cent, it is not immediately recognisable. For some, it can be challenging to find their way around busy and stimulating environments.

To ensure that everyone's stay at Stuttgart Airport runs as smoothly as possible, STR has been part of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Programme since April 2025.

Travellers can use the sunflower identification symbol to draw attention to their invisible impairment - voluntarily and without having to make a declaration. This helps to create more understanding and promote consideration in everyday life.

Service and information

All lifts in the terminals are barrier-free.

Guide dogs and assistance dogs are permitted in all areas of the airport. Whether they can be taken into the aircraft cabin depends on the respective airline - please enquire directly with them.

Tip: There is a baggage transport service at Stuttgart Airport. Luggage is brought to check-in by taxi, for example. The service can be booked for a small fee - by telephone on +49 151 46341364 (Monday to Sunday) or by e-mail to info@sag.aero (Monday to Friday).

Electronic revolving doors automatically adjust their speed and are also wheelchair accessible.

Barrier-free toilets are available in all terminals.

If you would like to stay overnight near the airport, there are 3 hotels in the immediate vicinity - all three around 200 metres from the terminals:
