Passport control
Schengen states
If you are travelling from a country that is a member of the Schengen Agreement or arriving from there, you will enter the country without passport control.
Tip: We still recommend that you have an identity card or passport to hand.
The Schengen states include:
Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
Non-Schengen states or non-European countries
Anyone travelling to or from a non-European country or a non-Schengen country goes to the designated counters for passport control - separately for EU nationals and travellers from other countries. You then proceed automatically to baggage reclaim and customs control.
Good to know:
The Easypass automated border control system is in use at passport control. The changeover to the new European EES procedure is also underway. More information on this can be found on the Federal Police website.
Visa and travel authorisation
Important for travelling to the USA and Great Britain
Citizens of a VWP (Visa Waiver Programme) country must apply for ESTA authorisation before entering the USA.
Anyone travelling to the UK needs a valid passport. Since 2 April 2025, an Electronic Travel Authorisation ( ETA) is also required. This can be purchased via the ETA app or the British government's website.
